Do it because of them! Do it for them!

Dr. Samara Ryce

I just love graduations! I love everything from the invitations, to the speeches, to the cheering loved ones, to the social media pictures and hashtags. Most of all, I love seeing people set a goal and accomplish that goal. And for those people who cross the stage to receive their diploma or degree, after dealing with what seemed like insurmountable challenges, fear or life circumstances, I cheer for them even more, because it takes some real grit, courage, and sacrifice to get to the finish line.

I cheer for them, because they took their difficult circumstances and used it as fuel to get them to a better future. I cheer for them because they realized that they had the power to change their lives, and they did just that. I cheer for them because they shut the mouths of the naysayers and those who told them to accept less.

It is sometimes hard to determine which decision to make as a single mom. Sometimes, you cannot have an ideal situation. You just have to make magic happen. You have to be all things to all people. And it is easier at times to chose the path that is not as difficult. The one that uses your circumstance as the reason to not advance yourself. It can be easier at times to say that you cannot do something because you have to be there for the kids. You cannot go to school, because the kids need you. You cannot seek that higher paying job because the kids need you.

I submit to you, that you can do it. Reach out to your family and friends. Get your village to help you. You don't have to do this alone. Maybe your brother can pick up your son from school. Or maybe your friend can babysit one day while you study. Perhaps you can partner with other single moms who are working hard to achieve their goals too. Form a pact. There is a way if you have the will! You can do it because of of your children. You can do it for your children! You are blessed like that and you have power like that! Do not let fear take over and write the rest of your story.

So go for it. Take that class. Start that business. Get that higher paying job. Finish that degree!!! It will be an unforgettable life lesson for them. Make your children your reason why. Push yourself!!! You can do it!!!
